  Through funding by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission we have developed a very comprehensive course combining health physics and radioactive waste management entitled Nuclear Environmental Protection.This course is given at the graduate level and as upper division senior class.Graduate students in the course are mainly from the Department of Mechanical Engineering which also includes a significant portion of distance learning students.Undergraduate students are those in the Nuclear Engineering Certificate Program as well as those in the Department of Physics pursuing the Radiation Physics Option.Typically there are about twenty five students taking the class each year.Topics include: Radiation in the Environment;Radioactivity;Interactions of Radiation with Matter;Dosimetry;Biological Basis for Radiation Safety;Radioactive Waste Management;Nuclear Fuel Cycle;Transportation;Atmospheric Dispersion and Release of Radionuclides and Spent Nuclear Fuel.Also included in the course is a one hour lab in simple shielding calculations.Through a long-term cooperation with Florida Memorial University, a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) these courses are also available their undergraduate students as well.All the lectures are videotaped and placed on a website available to the students.
