Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a supraventricular arrythmia characterized by uncoordinated atrial activation with consequent deterioration of mechanical function.AF is the most common rhythm disturbance, increasing in prevalence with age.Stroke is a common complication of this arrythmia, which appears in about 6% of these patients.Maintenance of sinus rhythm is the goal of therapy.Drug therapy is disappointing-according to the last great study with antiarrhythmic drugs: the CTAF-study (2000).After 600 days of treatment only less than 40% of those treated with class IC drugs remained in sinus rhythm and 60% of those treated with amiodarone.
