In the recent 20 years, about 3 million people died of natural disasters, at least 800 million people have been homeless, suffering from various diseases and suffering serious economic losses, including tens of billions of dollars in direct losses. The information is mentioned in the report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations on the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction released today. In 1987, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution declaring the 1990’s “10 years of special attention by the international community to strengthen cooperation in alleviating the danger of natural disasters under the protection of the United Nations”.
