Feenstra, a medical advisor to the Dutch Leprosy Society, visited Leprosy in Sichuan, Deyang and Xichang from September 19 to September 23 last year to conduct an assessment of the China-Netherlands Leprosy Prevention and Control Project. Dr. Feenstra highly praised the combination chemotherapy in Sichuan. He said that the joint chemotherapy management in Xichang was the best one he had ever visited. The on-site examination of the two cities in Mian and De-Erh showed that the progress of the collaborative project was satisfactory. He said if the WHO reduces leprosy control in the Liangpao area, the Leprosy Association of the Netherlands will provide assistance. During the talks, Dr. Feenstra conducted a detailed examination of the completion of the cooperation projects one by one according to the agreement between China and the Netherlands in 1988. He thought that the cooperation between 1989 and 1992 was successful and the tasks were accomplished well. The two sides conducted a light discussion on the Taiwan Stories from 1993 to 1997 and identified major collaborative projects. They agreed that the results of leprosy combined chemotherapy in Sichuan are remarkable, but not yet satisfactory in the early detection of patients and prevention of malformation. Therefore, in the next phase, publicity will be stepped up to reinforce leprosy knowledge training for rural health workers and carry out the main content of prevention and treatment of malformation. Dai Zhicheng, director of the Epidemic Prevention Department of the Ministry of Health, and Chen Kewen, deputy director of Sichuan Provincial Department of Health met with Dr. Feenstra and made friendly talks.
