范晔史学思想中有两个十分重要的方面 ,一是“以意为主 ,以文传意”。一是“因事就卷内发论 ,以正一代得失”。关于“以意为主 ,以文传意” ,就其史学思想而言 ,与司马迁、章学诚相类 ,这个“意”就是对历史内在本质及其演变轨迹的认识和史家作史的目的。关于“因事就卷内发论 ,以正一代得失” ,这既是史家作史的目的 ,更是史家高度社会责任感和历史责任感的体现。范晔在《后汉书》的纪传中对东汉一代有关教化与刑罚、安置功臣、改良风俗、外戚与宦官对政治的侵蚀、党锢的教训等问题的论议 ,就充分反映了他“卷内发论 ,以正一代得失”的深刻见解。上述两个方面 ,实为认识范晔史学思想的关键
