This paper discusses the use of horizontal drilling to reduce surface water level in open pit slopes. This method, in addition to its beneficial effect on the stability of the slope by means of drainage, can also provide important information on the hydrology of the ground. This article will discuss the latter aspect in detail and provide a case history. The importance of water in controlling rock and soil slopes for excavation will be outlined. This article also describes several methods that can be used to mine dry slopes.
