American writer Saul Bellow used the experience of Mr. Thamel, an elderly Jewish Holocaust survivor, to reveal the Jewish character of the protagonist in the novel “Mr. Symmel’s Planet.” The old gentleman is pictured as a very traditional Jewish man whose Jewish origin, determined by external forces, is dominated by the Jewish Holocaust and the Six Day War in Israel. Its Jewishness is not only of great significance, but also extends to the social significance of the marginalized others. This marginalization is not a passive situation, but a kind of active isolation. The writer characterizes the spiritual dilemma of human through the image of Mr. Symmel’s loneliness and silence, the alienation of groups, and the existentialism such as death. It explores the human existence and has worldwide universal significance.
