日本明治末期以前,剑道有过各种各样的名称,如古代叫作“击刀”,中古时期叫作“太刀打”、“兵法”、“剑法”,近代叫作“剑术”、“击剑”。直到明治时代末期才叫“剑道”,一直延用至今。现在在日本剑道的爱好者,大约有250万人。他们把长期以来属于武士们用的战刀,改成了竹剑,把剑道当作一种体育运动广泛地开展起来。250万人中拥有段位的大约50万人,而且参加者非常广泛,有中小学学生,有年轻妇女,也有外国人。剑道如此深受现代人的喜爱,说明这项活动是具有很大魅力的体育项目。
