This chapter describes the 8087 Digital Data Processor (NDP). Figure 4.1a shows the functional assignment of its outer leads and its internal structure. Figure 4.1b shows the connection to the 8086 / 8088CPU. Chapter 2 introduced the 8087’s 8086 16-bit system and the 80888-bit system block diagram. The 8087NDP has expanded the 8086/8088 command system to provide an important “data mashup” capability. It acts as a coprocessor connected to the 8086/8088, which is equivalent to adding eight 80-bit floating-point registers to the 8086/8088 register bank.
