中国摇滚被描述为一种反传统的工具:一种非主流文化、反抗主流意识形态、商业建制以及文化霸权的音乐。喜欢摇滚的人也多半不是一般的追星族,而是用歌声倾诉一种生活和思想。中国摇滚开始于1986年“西北风”开始进入刚刚萌芽的青年文化,中国最早的摇滚歌曲大概是现在大家所推祟的中国摇滚教父崔健的《一无所有》。摇滚在华夏大地上的“反文化”中生根发芽。在那个年代成为大众文化后导致了1990年“现代摇滚”的酝酿。从此,中国摇滚开始进入主流市场,但好景不长却又被认为在形式和音质上与粤语流行歌曲近乎相似。虽然后来又有另类摇滚的出现。但中国摇滚大势已去。从此中国的大部分摇滚乐迷不再抱有幻想,这也直接导致了后来中国摇滚的衰退。
