On April 23, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) have been found to be believed to be the virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Since this virus has been isolated, it can not only be cultured in vitro for further research and vaccine manufacture, but also be used for blood tests to help diagnose AIDS patients. The disease is transmitted through bodily fluids such as semen or blood, and scientists say they are studying ways to sift blood donors routinely to prevent blood transfusions and blood products from infecting the AIDS virus.
