航炮主要用来攻击飞机、舰艇、装甲车辆及其它地面目标。与机载导弹相比,航炮虽然射程短、无引导装置,但却以载弹量大、易多次攻击、不受干扰、无最短射程限制、能快速瞄准和射击等优点而与机载导弹互补,构成完整的机载火力体系。随着隐形技术的发展,增多了近距攻击的机会,特别是武装直升机的低空隐蔽接敌,实施近距火力突袭,更显出航炮火力猛、打击面广等优点。所以在以机载导弹技术为主高速发展的今天,航炮的发展仍受到各国军方的重视。
