In cold rolling mills producing special steel such as cold-rolled steel sheets, stainless steel sheets, and silicon-copper sheets for automotive or home electrical appliances, the recent trend toward direct computer control (DDC) has become increasingly prominent. One of the aims is to improve product quality, and another is to reduce the labor intensity of the transportation personnel. On the mill, the main mark of product quality improvement is plate thickness precision and straightness. For the former, various automatic plate thickness control devices (referred to as AGCs) have been adopted, however, the control system is required to be most reasonable and highly sensitive (for example, rapid reaction predictive control) as the accuracy requirements increase, DDC.
