Recently, Canbridge Consultants has developed a submerged fiber optic connector for the Royal Navy Experimental Diving Unit at HMS Vernon. I believe this connector will promote the use of optical fiber technology in the sea, because it overcame a key issue. Control cables and tether cables require diameters as small as possible to minimize drag and handling problems but also require a wide range of data processing capabilities. Fiber optic data transmission solves this problem and has many other advantages such as no electromagnetic interference, crosstalk mitigation issues and increased security. In the past due to the lack of a suitable connector, the optical cable has been limited in underwater applications
