Objective To observe the compensatory effect of ligating bilateral internal jugular vein and external jugular vein on intracranial venous return. Methods Rhesus monkeys were used to simulate bilateral radical neck dissection and their neck blood vessels were intervened to observe changes in intracranial pressure. Results Intracranial pressure was significantly increased by bilateral internal and external vein ligation. Retaining both external jugular veins can reduce intracranial pressure fluctuations and shorten the time to normal intracranial pressure. Conclusion Cervical lymph node dissection preserves the external jugular vein, which has the function of compensating intracranial venous return. It provides a simple and effective method for prevention and treatment of intracranial complications and postoperative facial reflux obstruction in radical neck dissection.
