The U.S. Air Force Cambridge Institute was established in 1945. As a subsidiary of the US Air Force System Command, the Cambridge Institute consists of 10 laboratories covering geology, geodesy, meteorology, high altitude atmospheric chemistry and mechanics, solar phenomena, radio astronomy and optical astronomy, Near-Space Properties, Radar Technology, Telecommunications, Electronic Materials and Devices, Millimeter Wave Technology, Antenna Systems and Plasma Regions. Research work on microwave materials, devices and components has focused on microwave physics laboratories and solid state science laboratories.
