As a typical metaphor language, idioms is an important starting point for the study of human language processing mechanism, and has drawn more and more attention from domestic and foreign scholars. However, there are still many controversies about the cognitive mechanism of idioms, especially non-Indo-European languages And second language idiom processing. In this study, with the help of incident-related electroencephalography (ERP), we observed and recorded behavioral data (correctness and response time) and ERP data of English majors with native Chinese in processing Chinese idioms and English idioms as foreign languages (Mainly N400). Through data analysis, it is found that idiom familiarity plays a significant role in understanding mother tongue and foreign idioms. Meanwhile, native idioms are easier to understand than foreign idioms at the same level of familiarity.
