[原文] 工之侨得良桐焉①,斫而为琴②,弦而鼓之,金声而玉应③,自以为天下之美也。献之太常④,使国工视之⑤,曰:“弗古!”还之。工之侨以归,谋诸漆工⑥,作断纹焉⑦;又谋诸篆工⑧,作古(?)焉⑨;匣而埋诸土⑩。期年出之(11),抱以适市(12)。贵人过而见之,易之以百金(13),献诸朝(14)。乐官传视(15),皆曰:“希世之珍也!”工之侨闻之,叹曰:“悲哉,世也!岂独一琴哉?莫不然矣(16)!而不早图之(17),其与亡矣(18)。”遂去,入于宕冥之山(19),不知其所终(20)。 [注释]: ①工之侨:作者虚构的人名,大约是“巧工”的变化隐喻。良桐:指好的泡桐树,其木可以制琴。②斫(zhuo浊):削砍。③金声而玉应:指琴的音质清脆悦耳。金泛指金属制作的乐器,如铜钟;玉泛指玉石制作的乐器,如磬(qing庆)。这里形容琴声有如钟磬合鸣。④太常:指太常寺,官署名称,专管祭礼、礼乐等事。⑤国工:喻国内技艺最高超的乐师。⑥谋:谋划商议。诸:即“之于”两字的合音。漆工:油漆工匠。⑦断纹:裂纹。⑧篆工:刻字工匠。⑨古(?)(kuan款):古代在钟鼎等器皿上篆刻
