我场位于昌吉县头屯河和三屯河冲积洲,为天山山前平原到下游冲积平原的过渡地带,一九五八年建立。土壤为黄土状亚粘土,局部夹有部分粉细砂薄层,吸水能力强,吸附性大,渗透性弱,耕层含盐量0.2—9％,大部分为1—5％,盐碱重的地表有白色盐结晶层。地下水主要流向为北——东北,埋深沿东侧枯沟附近为2.5米以下,其余均为0.5—1.5米,矿化度3—32克/升,大部为10克/升以上。植被有红柳、梭梭、胖姑娘等盐生植物,沿渠附近有芦苇、芨芨草等。因这里是群众灌区中弃荒的一个碱梁子,旧渠贯串其间,地形复杂,对开荒造田和规划建设极为不利。更由于三屯河上游没有调节水库,季节(春季)缺水严重,建场初期人畜饮水要到几公里外的马家海去拉碱水。我们就是在这样不利的条件下进行生产和科学实验的。
