So translation of the movie title is a creative work. It requires translators not only to be loyal to the original text, but also to convey the theme of the movie.
In China, there are three major translated editions:the mainland’s, Hong Kong’s and Taiwan’s. Because of the different social background, language habits and ideology, it can appear different translated editions itself. What’s more, as the economic and cultural exchange are closed increasingly, the different editions are influenced mutually.
Chapter Ⅰ
Comparing the Characteristic of Different Editions on English-Chinese Movie Title
1.1 The Mainland’s Characteristic
In the mainland, the translation of English movie title is not only as a way of cultural exchange, but also as an important way of educational communication which influences the national values. Therefore, the mainland edition is relatively formal. Yan Fu once put forward that the standards of translation should be “the standard of faithfulness, the standard of expressiveness and the standard of elegance”. The standard of faithfulness requires the translators translate the original text loyally. Most of China mainland translators respect this standard. This is the most important characteristic in the mainland translation. For examples, the Oscar winning movie The King’s Speech. The mainland translators translate it into 《國王的演讲》. Hong Kong edition is 《皇上无话儿》, and the Taiwan’s is 《王者之声:宣战时刻》. China mainland edition is more faithful. 1.2 Hong Kong’s Characteristic
As is well known, Hong Kong experienced a hundred years of colonial rule. In Hong Kong, the western and eastern culture conflict with each other and blend with each other. As Guo Moruo said “ Translation is a kind of innovative work, and good translation is equal to innovation, sometimes it can excess the innovation”. Hong Kong’s local movie industry is a highly commercial. So Hong Kong’s characteristic of translation trends to be more vivid and absorbing. The main characteristic is free translation in order to drawing public eyes and catering to public taste. For example the movie Toy Story, Hong Kong translators translate it into 《反斗奇兵》 ( the mainland edition is 《玩具总动员》). Hong Kong edition often use the words “love, fire, blood and death”, it also appears the words “violence”, “wildness” and “ghost”. Such as the movie Hereafter, Hong Kong translators translate it into 《通灵感应》( the mainland edition is 《从今以后》).
1.3 Taiwan’s Characteristic
Some Taiwan translations are influenced by China’s traditional culture and Hong Kong editions. The translation is not copying the original forms and contents. It often pays more attention on elegant style of language. The characteristic of Taiwan’s is more free and flexible. Some Taiwan’s editions are filled with strong romanticism and artistic literature, and filled with the words which can draw the eyes of audiences. But a lot of Taiwan editions keep the traditional language style of China mainland. It usually uses four-word idioms and proverbs. We can see this characteristic from the following examples:The Fast and the Furious, translate into《玩命关头》. And Ocean’s Eleven, translate into《瞒天过海》.
Chapter Ⅱ
Analyzing the Different Reasons and their Influence of Different Editions on English-Chinese Movie title
2.1 The Reason of Social Background and its Influence
After 1949, China mainland changed enormously in all aspects of social life. The mainland implements the socialist public ownership system. In the aspect of ideology, the mainland is putting Marxism-Leninism and communism as the guidance. Influenced by the social background and the traditional culture, many translators like using literal translation, and the mainland translators are more cautious and careful. Such as the movie Despicable Me, China mainland translators translate it into 《卑鄙的我》(Hong Kong edition is 《壞蛋奖门人》, and Taiwan’s is 《神偷奶爸》).
Hong Kong was dominated by Britain more than one hundred years from 1842. Now she has become an international commercial city. Under that background, Hong Kong’s culture has become a consumptive one, and Hong Kong edition more focus on the movie’s commercial value, and the translation of movie title trends to be cater to the taste of public. So many Hong Kong editions use sensational words. Such as the movie Up, Hong Kong translators translate it into 《冲天救兵》. Taiwan was dominated by Japan about 50 years from 1895. Western and eastern culture both have deeply influence to Taiwan’s culture, especially consumer culture. Taiwan is a part of China since ancient time. Obviously, China mainland traditional culture deeply influenced Taiwan’s. Under this kind of influence, Taiwan editions are usually simple, and the content is usually compact. Some Taiwan translations usually use Chinese four-word idioms, and some reference the imagery of China’s traditional culture. Such as the movie Shall We Dance, Taiwan translators translate it into 《随我婆娑》. Certainly, a good translation will draw more eyes from audiences. So Taiwan edition often uses the words which can stimulate public curiosity. Such as the movie Limitless, Taiwan translators translate it into 《药命效应》.
2.2 The Reason of Language Habits and its Influence
Language is an important carrier of culture. The different thinking mode and life habit lead to the difference of language, so it appears mainland’s mandarin, Hong Kong’s Cantonese and Taiwan’s Min Nan. Different language culture leads to the different translation of English movie title. The characteristic of China mainland’s mandarin is very quiet and smooth, so the mainland translation has been influenced by this characteristic. Hong Kong’s language is more open and explosive. In order to cater to the local citizens, Hong Kong translation often uses spoken language Cantonese. Like the movie Morning Glory, Hong Kong translators translate it into 《晨早兜巴星》 ( the mainland edition is 《早间主播》). Combining Chinese and English is another characteristic of Hong Kong translating. Such as Curly Sue, Hong Kong translators translate it into 《最Q拍档》. Taiwan’s language is more mildly and tactfully. But recently, Taiwan’s language becomes more boldly.
Conclusion
In this paper, by comparing the different translated editions on English movie title, it shows the different characteristics in the mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan. From this paper, it can sum up that the characteristic of the mainland often uses literal translation, and the translation is more closed to the original text. Hong Kong translation is more exaggerated. It usually uses the way of recreation. Taiwan translation is not only have the mainland’s characteristic, but also have Hong Kong’s, and it often uses the way of free translation. We can sum up the reason why it appears different characteristic is designed by the different social background, language habits and ideology. But there are no unified standards on the translated editions. Each of the three editions has some excellent titles, of course some bad titles too. We only can say that each of the editions have their advantages and disadvantages.
