Thomas Merton writings rich, and “love and life” is one of the special. This is a collection of papers published behind him, collecting his lengthy essay writing in the mid-1960s, which covers three aspects of love, morality and Christianity. The salient feature of this work is that he gives great attention to Christology when discussing these issues. At this stage of Merton’s life, his understanding of the Incarnation of Christ has been closely and unequivocally linked to his observation and comment on the problems of modern society. Interpreting his early monastic literature, including his best-selling autobiography, the Seven Mountains, needs to take into account the Christian orientation of his later works. Christ’s love for mankind and the social responsibility Christians have for his neighbors thus constitute the key thrust of the work that runs through Merton in the 1960s and the starting point for his handling of humanity, peace and love.
