Monroe’s short story The Friends of Me When I was Young is representative, with the recurrent mother-daughter relationship in many of her works as the main line; it is also unique in that the mother-daughter relationship in the story is metaphorical of the old and the new women’s literature paradigms . On the surface, the postmodern literary paradigm represented by her daughter has overturned the traditional literary paradigm represented by her mother through the scramble for and reclamation of the authority of narration. However, the in-depth interpretation of the dispute over narrative rights in the story shows that her daughter’s confrontation and rectification It becomes meaningless at the end of the novel. This reflects Monroe’s notion of literary tradition as well as the key to understanding and recognizing Monroe’s writing philosophy.
