At the American Literature Annual Meeting in 1996, Eric Newhall of the American Western Institute read out an article titled “Ideological Patterns and Creativity: Why Ralph Ellison did not complete his second novel” The article conclusively concludes that Ralph Ellison attributed to Ellison’s “personal heroism” when he refused to give birth to his second novel, “June Celebration.” This paper discusses the silence of Ralph Ellison’s second novel and its causes from three aspects: the contradiction between artistic aesthetics and social reality, the same fate and common confusion, and the destruction of literary ideal.
