胡宏和朱熹都是宋代的儒学大师,但他们在儒学上的致思路径和基本主张有很大差异。朱熹在己丑之悟后提出中和新说,开始批判其他各说,《知言疑义》就是这种批判的产物。具体来看,朱熹用“心统性情”“理一分殊”和“居敬穷理”分别批判他认为胡宏著作《知言》中大抵有问题的“心以成性”“心无善恶”和“先察识后存养”等思想。《知言疑义》可以说是理本论与性本论两个新儒学系统的一次正面冲突的典型代表。
