提高功率、降低油耗和燃用重油,对中速柴油机活塞的热负荷、结构强度和耐磨强度提出了更高的要求。由于铜铁活塞取代了整体铝活塞,柴油机气缸直径从小直到最大(超过600mm),均可以燃用重油,单位活塞面积功率可提高到5W/mm~2,爆发压力可提高到150巴(1巴=10~5P_a)。功率更高的发动机正在试验之中。对于这类发动机,要求内卡苏尔姆(Neckarsulm)的KS公司研制新一代的大型活塞。它可以承受200巴的爆发压力、30巴的平均有效压力和7W/mm~2的活塞功率。这种活塞由钢顶和球墨铸铁裙组成,顶部采用强化的振荡冷却方式、裙部润滑。目前这种活塞的试验效果很好。
