设计史在一定程度上可以理解为意义史、范畴史、形式史、组织史这四条基本线索相互交织、相互作用的历史。“现代性”曾经在设计史中被视为某种流派或样式的风格属性,实际上如果以上述的认识框架来反观设计史中的“现代性”问题,就会发现,“现代性”的问题事实上贯穿着设计史中的意义问题、范畴问题、形式问题与组织问题,它是在四个完全不同的层面上被解释和被定义的。在这个意义上,“现代性”成为设计史研究的一种批判性视角。
