“熱帶”是耶穌會士創製的地理學譯詞,爲19世紀來華的新教傳教士所繼承並傳播到日本,最終成爲漢字文化圈的標準術語。但是“熱帶”的傳播並非直線性的。因缺少本土知識分子的幫助,19世紀初來到廣東的新教傳教士没能及時注意到耶穌會士的文化遺産,對於耶穌會士中文著述中的譯名也没能加以借鑑。鴉片戰爭以後,情況發生了變化。來到上海的傳教士們,在王韜、李善蘭等幫助下,開始積極地吸收耶穌會士的成果。本文對譯名在傳承、普及過程中的種種影響因素進行了探討。
“Tropics ” is a geography translated by the Jesuits. It inherited and spread to Protestant missionaries who came to China in the 19th century and eventually became the standard terminology of the cultural circle of Chinese characters. But the spread of “tropical” is not straightforward. Due to the lack of assistance from local intellectuals, Protestant missionaries who arrived in Guangdong in the early 19th century failed to notice the Jesuits’ cultural heritage in a timely manner, nor did they learn from the Chinese translation of the Jesuits. After the Opium War, the situation changed. The missionaries who came to Shanghai began to actively absorb the achievements of the Jesuits with the help of Wang Tao and Li Shanlan. This article has carried on the discussion to the influencing factors in the process of inheritance and popularization of the translation.
