The costs of reforestation projects determine their competitiveness with other approaches that reduce the concentration of CO 2 in the atmosphere. We quantified biomass and soil available carbon in plantations and secondary forests in South America and the United States - Ecuador and Argentina - and calculated short-term carbon acquisition costs. The unit cost of CERs per short-term certification is 0.1 ~ 2.7 US $ / MgCO 2, depending on the opportunity cost, site suitability, discount rate and certification cost. In Ecuador, secondary forest is a viable and cost-effective method; in Argentina, it is relatively cheaper to rehabilitate land on highly suitable land. Our findings can be used to design cost-effective CO 2 sink projects and negotiate fair carbon prices for landowners.
