如果说,自行车公路赛是为优秀的自行车运动员搭起一个施展技艺的大舞台,那么职业车队与职业车手无疑是演出的主角。与足球运动一样,世界自行车运动的发展已经到了高度职业化的程度,而职业化的标志是高水平自行车运动员组成的职业车队的出现。像西班牙的巴内斯托车队和 ONCE 车队、法国的马培车队、荷兰的挪威尔车队、意大利的马维奇车队、美国的摩托罗拉车队,这些车队在欧美几乎达到了家喻户晓的程度。职业车队的背后都有财大气粗的赞助商,以保证车队经费的来源。事实上,许多车队就是以这些赞助商的名字来命名的。据悉,在欧洲,最热衷于赞助自行车运动的企业以橡胶、机械制造、银行等为主,而在亚洲,汽车、电讯等行业的厂家热情更高。韩国几乎所有的汽车和摩托车厂家都有自行车队,其中以起亚队(KLA)的实力最强。在马来西亚,最大的队伍是国家电讯队。充足的物质基础是提高自行车运动的前提条件。
