晚清时期,绅士的社会角色及其与国家权力之间的关系发生嬗变,绅士阶层由国家正式权力体系外的社会力量逐渐转变为地方行政体制内的权力实体,绅权的扩张使绅士与国家政权的关系逐渐发生变异,由最初的紧密合作、互为支持的良性状态逐渐转变为冲突对抗的紧张状态,导致地方政治生态发生重大变化。晚清国家权力与地方绅士之间的权力涨落,折射了晚清时期国家与社会关系的变动。
