The changing population of urban and rural areas and the transformation of urban economic structure have caused a surge in demand for the development of the fringe areas in China's big cities. The fringe of China's urban areas is growing at an unprecedented rate, yet its approach to development is very different from that of western countries. The rise of urban fringe areas is attributed to the shift of urban industries to high value-added industries and service industries, the acceleration of urbanization and changes in consumption patterns. The rapid changes have highlighted the challenge of planning the urban fringe areas in China - everything should start from scratch. The high cost of such projects can be imagined, a strong pilot project is essential. These large-scale projects change the urban land use patterns, population structure and modes of transportation of traditional Chinese cities outside the central urban area.
