在20世纪20-30年代的中国大地上，曾掀起一场规模浩大的乡村建设运动，参加团体达七百多个，在全国范围内设立了一千多处实验点。其中包括晏阳初的“河北定县实验”、梁漱溟等的山东(邹平)乡村建设研究院，以及陶行知、黄炎培等前辈的可贵探索。这些乡村建设方案及试验所获得的实际经验及所体现的实验精神，对当前中国日趋严重的“三农”问题的解决有很强的借鉴意义。
我国西部地区的开发过程也就是这一地区实现工业化、城市化的过程。从发展动力的角度研究西部地区的城市化，不仅可以从更加广阔的宏观视野把握城市化的总体进程，而且还能够对其现实方位进行准确的定位与透视。政策倾斜的拉力、后发优势的推力、区域共同发展的合力是把握西部地区城市化发展动力的三个基本点。
