On August 4 this year, a few French military transport teams were encountered ambushed by Vietnamese nationalists in a few miles near Hanoi. Nine hours of fighting each other, the Vietnamese people used machine guns, palm grinders and even mortars. The French killed 12 and wounding 41, and a car carrying 140,000 yuan of banknotes was captured. However, the clashes this time were but countless times the French army was attacked again after occupying Vietnam. This shows the insurmountable force of the Vietnamese nationalist movement and also shows the pending revision of the policy of the French colonies. R.Shaplen, a Newsweek magazine correspondent in Shanghai, recently visited Vietnam. Here is his coverage of Vietnam.
