An Analysis of Oral English Teaching Situation

  【Abstract】With the development of economy and culture, the interaction between countries is increasingly closer; English communication is becoming more and more important. But, the oral English teaching in China tends to have some disadvantages, how to change the present situation of college English teaching is particularly important. Aimed at these questions, this article analyses the deficiency of the current spoken English teaching, and put forward rational suggestions.

  Listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating are the five elements of English learning. Among these, speaking is what most English learners are afraid. “Dumb English” has been, in the past, what most people cannot escape: junior high school graduates can’t answer the simple question such as “what ’s your name?”, “How old are you?”; college students, in front of the foreign friends asking for help, are speechless; when studying abroad, university graduates can’t communicate with foreigners… All these phenomena, show that it is imminent to improve the level of oral English teaching in different angles.
  How to effectively solve the problem of “dumb English” has to be the concern of the teachers. As the saying goes: “知其然且要知其所以然”. And the key to solve the problem is to find the cause of the phenomenon. Only in this way, can do suit the remedy to the case. For the cause of “dumb English” and I think that can be summarized as three points:
  First, the disadvantages of the traditional exam-oriented education. Test has been the traditional exam-oriented education examination’s main method, while the situation of students’ learning and assessment standard of teachers’ teaching ability in the very great degree is the student academic performance.“Good teachers” often refers to teachers who can accurately catch examination questions, and students should also grasp key to examination questions of the teacher. In order to make the student performance improved, for the sake of graduation rates, teachers pay more attention to teaching. But teachers neglect the college entrance examination spoken language exam content. As a result, the students with high scores are dumb in English.
  Second, the disadvantages of traditional education mode and teaching method. The traditional education idea is that process of teaching is a process of inculcation. So many teachers fully play a leading role in class, in order to ensure that students can master the knowledge taught by them, often inevitably use cramming education teaching method, all along with the teacher as the main body, students are learning in a passive position, the oral practice opportunities are few and far between.   Third, students lack self-confidence. Many students caused by a lack of self-confidence, often can’t speak English. They are always afraid of mistakes. When they were asked to dialogue or answer questions, tey are often flushed, speechless. These phenomena not only embody their shyness, also reflect their lack of confidence.
  Our country, in recent years, promotes the quality of education and the new curriculum reform of English teaching is turning. Shortcomings of exam-oriented education have increasingly shown its elimination trend. And paying attention to the new curriculum is based on the law of education and students’ body and mind to teaching of the law of development. It requires taking the students as the main body, paying attention to ideological quality, psychological quality, the cultivation of the ability quality, etc; students are asked to learn the language of the project, they can not only master and memorize; it’s more important is to apply them into practice. English is a language and learning a language is not important in derivative of grammar or tense, but to be able to use.
  To break the passive situation of learning English students and to improve the level of spoken English, to say goodbye to “dumb English” fundamentally, I have the following suggestions:
  First, create a language environment. We know that a child can learn to speak, largely because he was in a language environment; every day he can be heard from many people around you. And he himself also unceasingly imitates, and gradually can express their needs, and this helps to explain the importance of language environment. In order to create language environment for students, I use English to organize the teaching in class, to explain in English. As far as possible to avoid the phenomenon of English in Chinese, not all the articles or dialogue translation into Chinese, is only the proper use of mother tongue when necessary.
  Second, stimulate interest, make students actively participate in classroom teaching. I have found that the students’ oral English and is closely related to classroom teaching. Some usual actively cooperate with the teacher in class and make corresponding reaction of the students, their speaking ability will be stronger; while others are relatively shy students or poor students tend to keep quiet in class, showed very not confident, their spoken English naturally. Therefore, I often into the emotional teaching in teaching, sincerely talking with students, understand students’ learning, life, narrow the psychological distance between teachers and students, to stimulate their interest in learning English. And encourage them to overcome difficulties, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Not only want bold said in class, but also to use everyday language at any time after class. I also in the teaching the proper use of the “Thank you/do/Well done/Never mind.” such words help to motivate students, make students an encouragement. Each class has more than eighty percent of the students in the classroom.   Third, change teaching method, give play to the role of the teacher’s guidance. Class, I advocate is give time back to the students, let the students say and practice more. The role of the teacher is the commander in chief, rather than a passionate speech speaker. For reading articles or dialogue teaching, I adopted the guide retell, dialogue, discussion, instant memorizing methods. Not only active classroom, but also everyone is brain exercise the students to think, the purpose of all speak.
  Four, timely praise, strengthen the success experience. In the process of oral English teaching, I think to improve my spoken English, set up the confidence of the students, make them feel the joy of success. Because the student level is different, I puts forward different requirements on different students, and try to find let student performance opportunities, and in a timely manner on its performance in the enjoy the pleasure of “success” at the same time, the joy of the victory into a positive force.
  It should be noted that the future of college English teaching will be a long way to go. And often faced difficulties and setbacks is teaching process of problem, but it often contains the hope and success. The key is: the teacher should coaxing, students must be persistent.
