In a project funded by NSFC,Professor Zhang Xiaowei of Rui Jin Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and his research team discovered that the fate of the PML-RARαoncoprotein is controlled by arsenic trioxide through direct binding of PML.A short report article published on Science in April 2010 reported this discovery. This report was co-authored by a group of 21 researchers in China and France including Dr. Chen Zhu. Arsenic,an ancient drug used in traditional Chinese medicine,has attracted worldwide interest hecause it shows substantial anticancer activity in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia(APL),the re- port says.
