光绪七年辛巳(公元一八八一)十六岁三月,赴杭州应试,入县学第七名。在杭游郡庠观宋高宗书《石经》及阮摹《石鼓文》,手拓《石鼓文》一本。为留心金石及搜采金石文字之始。八年壬午(一八八二)十七岁秋,于扬州得仪征张氏榕园藏石拓本十余纸。从山东碑估刘金科赁碑读之,一碑值二十,以校勘《金石萃编》。十年甲申(一八八四)十九岁著《读碑小笺》、《存拙斋札疏》两书。十一年乙酉(一八八五)二十岁与兄振共读碑,成《金石萃编校字记》、《寰宇访碑录校议》各一卷,振亦成《碑别字》五卷,从路山夫(坯)得颜书《八关斋会报德记》
