The Liberal Democratic Party of Japan (Liberal Democratic Party) is a rare long-ruling political party in the world after the war. Since 1955, the LDP has been in power for 38 years. During the LDP’s past presidents have been in the prime minister position. After a brief loss of state power in 1993, the Liberal Democratic Party formed a coalition government with the Socialist Party in 1994. Despite the fact that the Socialist Party chief Tomiyama Shimonfasa was the prime minister, the LDP has dominated the cabinet. After Murayama stepped down, Librarian Ryutaro Hashimoto became prime minister in 1996. Since then, although the Liberal Democratic Party has established a joint cabinet with other political parties, its president still occupies the post of prime minister and holds the dominant position in the cabinet.
