In the past two years, I mainly studied the issue of South Korea. I think the experience of South Korea is even more worthy of our attention than that of the United States, Japan and Europe in science and technology innovation. In the early 1960s, South Korea, like China, was a poor and white agricultural country with a per capita GDP of more than 70 U.S. dollars. However, over 40 years have passed since the economic strength of China and South Korea has been greatly different: in 2004, the per capita GDP of South Korea exceeded 11,000 U.S. dollars, 11 times that of ours and surpassed that of Taiwan. Many of South Korea's industries such as automobile, shipbuilding, semiconductors and nuclear power started later than ours. The first subway in Seoul was 10 years behind Beijing, but now South Korea has taken the lead in these areas. Both countries are highly dependent on foreign trade, but China's exports of science and technology products are affixed
