Before the 1970s Before 1970, the degree of distance education in Western universities was mainly studied around the long-distance independent study department of regular universities. Like the formal education, these learning departments are basically funded by government education departments, although the subsidies granted to expatriates are usually lower than those of current students. At many universities in the United States, long-distance divisions, even though students are currently enrolled in college credits, belong to the same category as the Education Ministry, and must be self-financing. Excluding the correspondence schools and the extra-curricular learning institutes run by the provincial education ministries in Australia and Canada, and the French Distance Learning Center (now renamed the National Center for Distance Education), in the early 1970s the world’s long-distance education sector Most other organizations are privately run.
