世界闻名的美国陆军军官学校(西点军校)从1802年建立以来,一直设有军事历史课。1832—1871年任该校军事艺术与工程系主任的丹尼斯·哈特·马汉,十分重视军事历史教育。马汉认为,一名军官只有获取了广泛的战争历史知识,才能培养成材。“所有军事科学都源出于军事历史。从军事历史当中我们可以找到成功与失败的例证,以此来检验战略规律”,提高军官的作战指挥能力。 20世纪60年代中期以前,西点军校的军事历史课主要讲授战役、战斗史,探讨、总结对战争进程有影响的作战原则。1969年,军事历史课脱离军事艺术与工程系,并入新成立的历史系。从此,军事历史课的内容不再囿于作战史,而是向高层次发展,讲授战争
The world-renowned US Army Officer School (West Point) has been running military history classes since its establishment in 1802. Dennis Hart Mahan, who headed the military arts and engineering department at the university from 1832 to 1871, attached great importance to military history education. Mahan argues that an officer can acquire talent only by acquiring a wide range of historical knowledge of the war. “All military science stems from the military history, and from the military history we can find examples of successes and failures in order to test the strategic laws,” and to improve the operational command capabilities of military officers. Before the mid-1960s, the military history class at West Point Military University mainly taught campaigns and history of fighting to discuss and summarize the operational principles that have an impact on the progress of the war. In 1969, military history classes were separated from the Department of Military Arts and Engineering and incorporated into the newly formed Department of History. Since then, the content of the military history course is no longer confined to the history of war, but to a high level of development, teaching war
