Recently, the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography announced that in 2017, the Vega Prize will be awarded to Professor Yao Sandong of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences in light of its contribution to glacier and environmental research in the Tibetan Plateau. He is the first Chinese scientist to receive this award and the first Asian scientist to receive this award. The “Third Pole Environment Project” initiated by him not only gathered the elite of science and technology who engaged in the research on the environmental change in the Tibetan Plateau internationally, but also made important scientific discoveries.
