Submarine cable communication systems indicate that several engineering and design issues not encountered by land-based communication systems have been addressed. Submarine communications system installers and operators have made significant contributions to research and development efforts, including ensuring system reliability, meeting environmental requirements, repairing damaged submarine cables, and stressing of optical fibers during high-stress cable laying protection. Several well-known institutions in Europe, Japan and the United States are implementing submarine cable projects in recent years. Existing and planned submarine cable systems are long-distance, high capacity and deep sea laying. The most massive system is crossing the Atlantic and Pacific routes and is now in the design, equipment preparation and prototype testing phase. Several short-range systems, although not announced, have been piloted in several parts of the world. Most submarine cable systems do not have relay stations, they are laid on two islands or between land and islands.
