Both averaged transmitted-reference (ATR) modulation technique and forward error correction (FEC) coding technique can improve the performance of Ultra-wideband (UWB) autocorrelation receiver by adding some redundant signals. In order to study which technique can provide much better improvement with the same amount of redundancy,a performance comparison between ATR modulation system and BCH coded DPSK system in a multipath channel was made in this paper. The two systems were analyzed in theory and simulated in the IEEE multipath channel model. The results show that ATR modulation technique has more superiority at low Eb/N0 (far distance) situation, but only raise the performance at small reference signal numbers; At high Eb/N0 (near distance) situation,FEC coding technique has better bit error rate and can reduce ISI more remarkable.
