缩略法是现代英语中一种主要的构词手段,由这种构词法创造的新词具有一定的生命力,特别是在科技英语和报刊英语中使用更为广泛。这种构词法具有造词简炼、使用简便的特点。缩略法可分为两类:第一类叫缩短词(clipped word),即对原来完整的词进行加工,缩略其中的一部分字母,构成新词;第二类叫首字母缩略词(acronym),即将词组中主要词的第一个字母(首字母)联成一个词。(一)缩短词缩短词根据缩略部位的不同.可分成下列四种:1.缩略词的首部,这种词头的省略叫做 front clipping.例如:phone=telephone(电话),bus=Omnibus(公共汽车),chute=parachute(降落伞),copter=helicopter(直升飞机),quake=earthquake(地震),plane=airoplane(飞机),dozer=bulldozer(推土机),scope=telescope(望远镜);microscope(显微镜)。2.缩略词的尾部,这种词尾的省略叫做back clipping,例如:
