00. Introduction The Crescent Society is a literary society very influential in the late 1920s and early 1930s. It was first formed in Beijing in 1923, first at a party and later at a club. Members include Liang Qichao, Hu Shi, Xu Zhimo, Yu Shangyuan, Ding Xilin, Lin Huiyin and others. In 1926 the club ceased its activities. In the spring of 1927, Hu Shih, Xu Zhimo and Yu Shangyuan organized the Crescent Bookstore in Shanghai. In March of the following year, the monthly “Crescent Moon” was founded. The Crescent Society officially started its activities and attracted the attention of the cultural circles at home and abroad.
