- Some research labs in Japan and the United States find the same iron-based compounds independently and are on the market. If one really wants to consider a material used to make permanent magnets, it is likely to be somewhat iron-containing. In fact, however, the best permanent magnets have had little or no iron at all over the years. But now it’s back to the iron. In the past few months, some research groups in Japan and the United States have announced the discovery of a new compound whose magnetic properties are by far the best. The approximate composition of R 2 Fe 14 B, where R is a light rare earth (usually neodymium). Sumitomo Metal Industries of Japan has begun accepting orders to produce magnets from this new compound.
