Cardiovascular death rates have dropped about 50% in the past 50-60 years. However, the prevalence of cardiovascular disease is still high, with cardiovascular-related deaths still tops in the United States. It is estimated that prevention efforts have resulted in a reduction in cardiovascular deaths of at least 50%; in particular, major improvements include a decrease in mean cholesterol levels, mean blood pressure levels and tobacco use rates. Unfortunately, the incidence of obesity and diabetes has increased over the past 10 years, largely offsetting the cardiovascular mortality that would have been declining.
