In the first experiment, 15 Citrus aurantiaca (Citrus reticulata) early-growing Satsuma mandarin oranges were planted in pits in late May and Hoagland and Synelor solutions were applied to normal conditions. In mid-July, the surface of each pit was completely covered with a perforated plastic lid, each pit continuing to supply 20 liters of air containing 0-50 ppm of ethylene from July 14 to August 12. Examination in mid-August revealed that the growth of the elongated root tip and the activity of the succinate deaminase were almost inhibited when the ethylene content was 5 ppm and above 5 ppm; such concentrations also caused the root tip to swell and the root to turn brown . When the ethylene is 0-0.05 ppm, many root hairs are conical, papillary, and pear-shaped; and as the ethylene concentration increases
