纵观古今,北仑的文化无不向世人展示着其悠久开放的重要特质。港城北仑,曾因历史上通过海路向海外源源不断输出丝绸、瓷器而著名,自唐代以来,就陆续开辟了新碶、穿山等港口,成为“海上丝绸之路”的重要通道,是“海上丝绸之路”宁波起点的重要组成部分,是世界文化遗产中国大运河的出海口和古海上丝绸之路的始发港之一,历史上,宁波与日本、韩国的经贸文化往来更多,与东北亚可有更多的对接。
