Recently, Beijing Peking Opera Workers’ Federation held a joint performance to raise welfare funds, and most of the proceeds were used to subsidize the poor entertainers in the Peking opera industry, enabling over 750 life-hardy colleagues to enjoy Chinese New Year. This is the first time that the Peking Opera Association, after its liberation, was reorganized into the Beijing Union, to give full play to the unity and mutual assistance of artists. Since the founding of new China, non-governmental career artists have not completely escaped the threat of poverty despite having undergone fundamental changes in their lives. Once an accident such as illness or death occurs, their lives will be affected. Therefore, in recent years, the government has continually allocated funds for relief and made individual grants. In 1956, the State Council allocated five million yuan to give a wider range of subsidies and reliefs to non-governmental professional theater troupes throughout the country. These facts show the state’s concern for the artists. While engaging in large-scale economic construction, they have also taken proper care of the sufferings of the artists. However, the artiste also felt uneasy about relying on the government’s long-term remedies, so Beijing Peking Opera artists inherit and carry forward the tradition
